Still Rocking With Those Classics

When it comes right down to it, there are regular songs and then there are those that are anything but that. I am talking about those favorite songs that we all have that when you hear them on the radio you tend to crank up the sound a little higher than normal.

They never seem to get old and you certainly never get tired of hearing them. Every so often I get caught in a crosswind of this elevator type music that, in my opinion, is not music. Not my choice anyway. When I hear this junk I want to blast them out some real tunes. You know, crank up some or give them a double dose of Foghat. It would be cool to even light up their ears with some Black Oak Arkansas. Have Jim Dandy come to their rescue.

I know most of those elevator listeners would cringe when my music met their eardrums but that’s OK because turnabout is fair play. What I want to see is my grandchildren come for a visit and say, Hey Grandpa, I love you, crank us up some . Okay Babe, Jump up here in my lap and tell what song is it you want to hear. Now that is what I want to hear!

Lynyrd Skynyrd Loses Another Member

The recent death of pianist Billy Powell from has added yet another sad time for the bands members, families, friends and fans.  He was one of the original members of the band from the early years. At age 53 , he was strickened with a fatal heart attack this past January.

I was both shocked and saddened when I learned of this latest loss by one of the greatest bands to ever take the stage anywhere. This leaves only Gary Rossington as the lone continuous member still with the band. Current guitarist Rick Medlocke was an early drummer for the band who left years ago to form Blackfoot as lead singer and guitarist of that band.

I was proud to see that Billy Powell was present at the ceremony when was finally inducted into the Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame. In my opinion that was long overdue. Although only two others were included with him, the other two being Rossington and former drummer Bob Burns. But hey, at least they did finally take their places among the best of the best.

Below is an audio link of performing Free Bird during their 1987 Reunion Tour featuring original members Billy Powell,  Artimus Pyle, Leon Wilkeson(The Mad Hatter), Gary Rossington and Ed King.

Classic Rock And Its Classic Fans

and its loyal fan base are both rather unique. The music itself has the unmatched qualities that can satisfy those cravings of desire to hear some music.

The actual Fan might come in many different shapes, forms, and fashions but most all have one thing in common, their loyalty to that particular brand of music.

The fan will be the one that probably couldn’t tell you the name of today’s hottest song, or if you were to ask if they had ever heard this or that song which was recently released, most times you would get a no for an answer. But if you were to switch gears in the questioning and ask that fan what was said in a particular song, not only would you get your answer but probably could get a complete word for word lesson for the entire song.

Even some of today’s younger generation of music fans have chosen as their favorite because that is what they grew up listening to while their parents enjoyed the golden sounds of the 70’s and beyond. I would much rather pull up to a traffic light and see the vehicle in the lane beside me feature a younger group patting their hand to on the radio instead of the thumping bass of those other types of music. That would get a satisfying smile and a nod from me every time.

With the onslaught of Rap and Hip Hop blazing onto the scene of late and the continued hardcore Country Music Fans around most corners, it sure feels good to me when I can run up on a fellow Music Fan out there and normally can strike up a conversation with them about it with relative ease.

All this talk about Music has caused an itch in me that needs some help. So, for my fellow fans of this great music, I will leave you with a small treat from a late 70’s group.
